3 Tricks for Prolonging the Battery Life of Your Apple Device

According to Apple, Battery life is the amount of time your device runs before it needs to be recharged, and if you maintain it properly you’ll get the most out of your iPhone and iPad.

One of the best ways to take care of your Apple device is to stay up-to-date on the latest software. Apple’s software updates often include energy-saving technologies.

Battery life is one of the most important features of your Apple Device. It’s your life raft. If you start to see your battery percentage dropping, and you are away from a charging source, you’ve lost your device. Lose your battery on these occasions and that might mean you miss a work call or email, or you can’t watch your favorite TV show.

No outlets in sight? If you’re going to be away from power for a long period of time, we’ve got a few tricks for you to extend your battery life. Let’s talk about three tricks for prolonging the battery life of your Apple device:

Trick #1: Adjust Your Display

You want to adjust the brightness of your screen display to save battery life. To keep your energy output to a minimum, go to:

  • Settings > Display & Brightness and turn Auto-Brightness off. Drag the Brightness button as low as your eyes can tolerate.

There’s another step you can take to further conserve battery life when it comes to your display. Go to:

  • Settings > General > Accessibility and turn Grayscale

Your screen won’t be as colorful, but Grayscale is a super battery saving feature since displaying colors consumes additional battery life even when brightness is reduced.

Trick #2: Stop Background Activities

Push notifications use a lot of battery life. What is a push notification? Those are the notices you get when you have a new message or event, but you aren’t actively using the application. These use a lot of battery.

For any app that doesn’t require your immediate attention, go to:

  • Settings > Notifications > Click on Each App and Set Allow Notifications to off mode for the ones you don’t need.

Ones to consider leaving on are: Email, Messages and Weather.

The other activity going on the background is background refresh. When low on battery life, or simply to preserve it, you can stop apps from updating in the background. Go to:

  • Settings > General > Background App Refresh and set the button to off.

Will your apps still refresh? Yes, once you open the app, they’ll refresh. The power savings are often worth it especially for apps you don’t use often.

Trick #3: Turn Off Location Services

Using GPS can drain a battery in no time. If you aren’t traveling, you certainly don’t need an app to tell you where you are. Go to:

  • Settings > Privacy > Location Services and select never. You can also set each app individually if you want to leave one on.

In Conclusion

What happens if your Apple device is hot, and your battery is nearly drained, and you just have to use it now or in the future? Here are a few last minute tricks:

  • Keep Wi-Fi on at all times. A Wi-Fi connection uses less power than a cellular network. To turn it on, go to Settings > Wi-Fi to access a Wi-Fi network.
  • View your battery usage information so you know exactly where you stand. Go to Settings > General > Usage > Battery Usage.
  • Go into Airplane mode and save your power for when you need it. Note that you can’t make or receive calls in this mode.
  • Power cycle your device by holding down the power button until it turns off. Then reboot.
  • Take an external battery with you when you travel.
